Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to buy the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N with a stick. But now you can also opt for a dual-clutch automatic with N Grin Shift, which apparently allows you to instantly shift the turbo speed to increase the speed a bit. Sounds fun.
The car moves higher than with an automatic transmission. Seats with illuminated logos (!), A larger standard information and entertainment display and a rich set of standard driver safety features are included. In addition, the Performance pack tune, which adds 25 horsepower, is now the foundation of the car.
Starting the Veloster N with only the manual transmission was a bold commercial move, as of course many Americans and potential customers can’t drive. (You miss it!) But I think it will pay off for Hyundai.
The car was universally loved by test pilots, including me, in part because of the mechanical gearbox that can be done to make it easy to drive a sporty compact car. Hyundai has now received a number of luminous reviews, including Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year, to entice customers and an automatic opportunity to sell to people who don’t want to learn the three-pedal legs.
But DCT still has to be good. Honda has not yet offered an automatic Civic Si or Type R because it understands that the manual shift experience is critical to the personality of these cars. Well, CTR has enough HP to probably still be fine using a great vending machine. But I don’t think Honda really has a vending machine that can be both cheap and fun enough to make sense of the ever-popular Civic Si.
Hyundai, on the other hand, may not have this problem. I still remember being shocked at how much fun the Kia Soul DCT felt and that car was barely optimized for fun driving. I’m sure the Veloster N DCT will be good, although I’m forced to add that I would never have dedicated it until there was a traditional guide on the table.
Here is some information about this transfer that Hyundai has announced release today:
N Eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission
Hyundai has developed the N DCT with manual or fully automatic modes and eight speeds to increase acceleration and efficiency. The N DCT is equipped with electronic drives that control the dual clutch and provide driving comfort, fuel efficiency and driving pleasure. Unlike a dry dual-clutch transmission, the wet N DCT uses oil to significantly improve lubrication and cooling performance as required with higher torque. The new N wet type double clutch transmission uses an electric oil pump that increases thermal endurance and reduces direct parasitic tension in the power plant. The N DCT was developed entirely by N engineers with a focus on fun driving.
N DCT Engineering
The Veloster N DCT transmission uses two clutch units: one for odd gears and the other for smooth and reverse gears. The clutch drive unit uses a lightweight, electric motor-driven system for greater efficiency, optimum displacement response and compact packaging. It also has an external damper to improve NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). The DCT uses an electromechanical drive that provides lightweight design, greater fuel efficiency, and precise engine switching through the engine’s electronic control unit. The DCT drive unit uses hollow input shafts for extremely easy and extremely responsive displacement.
N Grin Shift
The N DCT even has game-related features that increase driving pleasure. N Grin Shift (NGS) increases maximum torque by seven percent from 260 pounds / ft. up to 278 pounds allowing temporary turbocharging and maximizing transmission response. When N Grin Shift mode is activated, the powertrain switches to its sportiest program for up to 20 seconds (eg for a pass). In addition, transfer customization settings are now available in Custom screen mode.
Race-like Shift Logic Handbag
This goal of ‘fun driving’ regulation is further reinforced by the aggressive change in feeling felt by the activation of ‘push’. When braking, the lower gears are selected ergonomically by pushing the gear selector forward without braking against the forward g-forces of the driver. Conversely, with rear acceleration forces g, higher gears are selected using the natural rear push of the lever.
N Power Shift and N Track Sense Shift
N Power Shift (NPS) is activated when the car accelerates when more than 90 percent of the throttle is required. This reduces torque by using gearshifts to give the wheels maximum power every time the gear is changed. This allows the driver to respond quickly to dynamic acceleration when shifting at a factory-set time of 5.6 seconds from zero to 60 miles per hour. N Track Sense Shift (NTS) detects when road conditions are optimal for dynamic driving and activates automatically by selecting the right gear and shifting time for optimum performance.
Oh, the shift in power! Grin Shift !! Track Sense Shift !!! Hyundai really … felt compelled to name things. But if that means a good driving experience, I don’t mind reading the car brochure like a comic. (Who jokes that I have a giant parrot painted on the hood of a car, I love this shit.)
If you want to create a more mature set, you may be interested to know that all Veloster N built-in safety features now include: “Collision Assistance and Avoidance, Lane Keeping Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant, Driver Attention Alert, Collision Avoidance Assist for the Blind locations and Rear Crossing Collision Warning. “
Illuminated logo seats, which is the thing apparently, also save 4.4 pounds for the old, so that’s great.
Price updates are TBD, but the 2021 Veloster N is expected to hit Hyundai stores in October. I would argue that abandoning the 250-horsepower option of the “standard package” means base price will be closer to $ 30,000, but we’ll see!
