However, Mars Express has a unique qualification to do so. It has an instrument called Visual surveillance camera, from which an unusually wide area of the planet can be photographed in one frame. And the spacecraft’s orbit rises to the Arsia Mons sight in the morning when the cloud is visible.
“You can’t see this huge cloud scale if your camera only has a narrow field of view or if you only observe in the afternoon,” said Jelena Ravanis, a graduate of the CCTV team. statement. “Fortunately, the Mars Express, a highly elliptical spacecraft orbit coupled with a wide field of view of a VMC instrument, allows us to take pictures of a large area of the planet in the early morning. That means we can catch it!”
Scientists last saw Arsia Mons’s tail-like cloud in September and October, at that time and again, the days are the shortest per year in the northern hemisphere of the Red Planet and the longest per year in the southern hemisphere. Arsia Mons itself is just south of the Mars equator and stretches to about 20 miles (12 miles) high.
Scientists hope that by continuing to explore the strange cloud, they will be able to understand how long it takes for it to appear and why it only appears in the mornings.
