Former all-star star Mike Foltynewicz has had a hard week. He was a DFA friend to the Braves on Monday after showing a sharp drop in speed for the second season in a row, followed by a pair of trips against the Marlins and Rays. And yesterday he was resentful against Gwinnett because none of the other 29 teams asked him to give up. It just shows how much it has dropped in a few months.
Even after the nasty 2019. In the beginning, Foltynewicz managed to relax and became the best pitcher of the Braves, which eventually led him to start the 5th “winners” game against the Cardinal of St. Louis. We don’t have to repeat what happened in that game, but Folty still had top-of-the-rotation primers. So far this has not been the case in 2020.
Since last year, Folty’s speed has dropped by five miles per hour, and from 2018 onwards. – more than seven miles per hour, so a lot of people (myself included) doubt if there is any major problem. Yet Alex Anthopoulos made it clear yesterday on the MLB Network’s Heat that Folty returned to camp healthy and in good condition after a long layoff, with just no items. And for a pitcher who has always been a “thing”, there is no way for him to have much success if he can’t fix it.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Bravai leaves the door open to come back. Foltynewicz will train with a squad of taxis in Gwinnett, and if he manages to show a steady increase in speed, the Braves will likely give him another shot. After the rotation of Mike Soroka and Max Fried, they don’t have many other promising options.
One way what can be folty is if it gains weight.
Although Anthopoulos claimed through the MLB network that Folty had returned to camp in good condition, it was clear that he was much nicer than he had been for many years. After he was horrified by Gwinnett, Foltynewicz acknowledged the concern and reportedly told Brian Snitker that he was already working with him in the hope that it would increase speed.
#Braves Snitker says the team expects to gain some folty over the diet and workout plan. Snitker thinks they can regain his speed if he puts it back right.

Folty it won’t be an easy way back and I wouldn’t expect him to ever return to Atlanta. But as long as there are no major problems, there is a chance that he will sort things out in Gwinnett. Foltynewicz managed to do that last year and returned as the best pitcher in the Braves. It will be a little harder to do this season because there is no minor league season, but with bulpen sessions and live game coaches, coaches will be able to tell if his stuff will take shape again. For brave people who crave help with the spin, let’s hope Folty can change that soon.
