Hubert and Kalisa, longtime African lion partners at the LA Zoo, are convicted

African lions Hubert and Kalisa died at the LA Zoo after a long life, zoo officials said on Thursday.

The lions, both 21 years old, were cured after age-related health problems began to worsen their quality of life, the LA Zoo report said.

For the past six years, Hubert and Kalisa have been inseparable from their comrades at the LA Zoo. Although Hubert had 10 pups in his lifetime, he was not with Kalisa.

“This is a very serious loss for our zoo community,” said Alisa Behar, the zoo̵

7;s curator, in a statement.

“Early in the morning, the staff regularly heard Hubert’s alarming roar, and I personally missed them hearing them walking around the pitches. You can’t think of Hubert without thinking of his companion Kalis; they have been an integral couple for years. “

Hubert was born in 1999. February 7 Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, and Kalisa was born in 1998. December 26 Oklahoma City Zoo. Finally, they chose separate paths to the Seattle Woodland Park Zoo, then in 2014. Together he moved to the LA Zoo.

Lions lived longer than most. According to the zoo, most African lions live in the wild at an early age, and in captivity on average 17 years.

“Hubert and Kalisa are a regular part of the LA Zoo experience, and our staff and guests have been touched by a faithful friendship,” said Denise Verret, zoo manager. “Their longevity really reflects the level of expert care provided to our older animals by our veterinary and animal care teams. These lions will remain a positive part of our history and will miss them a lot. ”

Due to the depletion of prey and the illegal trade in lion parts for traditional medicine and other purposes, African lions are considered vulnerable. It is estimated that less than 25,000 lions live in Africa.
