Massachusetts health officials reported another 29 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 8,360.
Officials have also confirmed another 356 cases of the virus, bringing the total number of cases in the country to at least 109,096, according to the Department of Public Health, based on 15,556 new molecular tests reported Wednesday.
The number of new cases has increased since yesterday, but health officials noted a delay in reporting the results of that provider’s laboratory tests to DPH due to a technical reporting error from the hospital team.
“These newly released test results have been included in today̵7;s dashboard report and reflect today’s case totals,” officials noted. “However, these positive test results were assigned retrospectively to the relevant test date.”
The virus is currently spread to 390 people.
The New York Times reports that some hard-hit states, such as Florida, California, Texas and Arizona, are starting to crumble and even shrink. But in some places, notably Arizona, Texas, and South Carolina, the death toll has risen.
The seven-day average for new cases in the U.S. since Tuesday is 65,218, according to The Times. There are currently more than 4.3 million cases of the virus and approximately 150,340 deaths in the United States.
Infection in Massachusetts has increased slightly in recent weeks. The officials believe it is the result of several “small groups” linked to the latest rallies, Prime Minister Charlie Baker said on Monday. The percentage of positive tests increased from about 1.7% to about 2%, Baker said.
Baystate Health on Monday reported an outbreak of new infections at Baystate Medical Center, affecting 23 workers and 13 patients. Baystate Health President and CEO Dr. Mark Keroack said the outbreak could be traced to one worker who returned to work after a visit to a state where a new “karst spot” for the virus had been identified.
An outbreak also occurred in the Cape Town town of Chathame after at least 10 people attending a house party on July 12 tested positive for coronavirus. Cape officials announced on Sunday that they would offer pop tests to anyone attending the party, or that there were close contacts with someone there.
On Tuesday, Holyoke Soldiers ’Home, which has been the site of one of the deadliest coronavirus outbreaks since the pandemic began, was said to suspend visits after a facility resident recovering from COVID-19 re-detected a positive virus virus.
