SEC Football Schedule 2020: 10 Games, Conference Fixtures Only Begins September 26, Two Days

Analysis: The SEC is reportedly moving to the 10-game conference schedule for the football season

With college football schedules across the country and the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC announced Thursday afternoon that it had moved to a schedule of 10 games, conference only, in 2020. For the season. The SEC is also pushing the start of the season on Saturday, Sept. 26, as originally scheduled for 2020. Campaign Week 4.

With the start of the season on September 26, the SEC Championship game will be postponed for two weeks to Saturday, December 1

9. This creates flexibility for teams with two options for running makeup games, as the adjusted schedule will be mid-season. Up to a week for each school and open dates for all programs on December 12, the week before the title game.

It is not known at this time how the SEC will complete the two additional games on its conference schedule, as the revised set of games will be announced later by the league. SEC members traditionally play eight conference games each season: six within their respective divisions, one regular cross-division opponent, and one rotary cross-division rival.

Florida Athletics Director Scott Stricklin said the SEC will maintain its two-unit structure on Thursday night and will not play in 2020. The season as a single division, a model to which the ACC moved on Wednesday. He also believes the SEC will work for “competitive fairness” by identifying two additional conference games that each team will play this season.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey explained the conference’s decision in a statement:

“This new football schedule is in line with the educational goals of our universities – to allow a safe and orderly return to our student population and to provide a healthy learning environment in these exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 virus. This new schedule supports the safety measures taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our camp communities.

“We believe that these schedule adjustments provide the best opportunity to complete the entire season by giving us the ability to adapt to the nature of the liquid virus and the flexibility to adjust schedules as needed in the event of disruptions. but they are unique and, hopefully, temporary, circumstances that require non-traditional measures. ”

The 14 SEC commission chairs met nearly Thursday to make that planning decision one day after the league’s athletics executives offered to follow only the conference model.

The SEC joins the top ten and Pac-12 decides in 2020. Play conference schedule only. The ACC announced on Wednesday that it will play a schedule of 11 games with 10 competitions in a multilingual competition and one game without a conference.

It is currently unknown how the SEC decision may affect ACC scheduling plans for the four major non-conference match games (Florida-Florida State, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Kentucky-Louisville). Auburn – North Carolina and Arkansas-Notre Dame were the other SEC-ACC games scheduled for this season. (Fighting Irish 2020 is a full member of the ACC.)

Other non-conference games hosted by SEC teams that have lost this season include LSU-Texas and Tennessee-Oklahoma. (The Alabama-US commissioner was previously canceled due to a report on Pac-12 planning.) The Greater 12 has not yet announced any firm plans for its 2020 plan. The loss of schedules, though, of these games can affect its decision-making process.
