Ted Wheeler: Portland mayor demands immediate meeting with DHS to discuss ‘ceasefire’

Mayor Ted Wheeler said on Twitter on Monday night that both he and Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty are invited to a meeting with Wolf and senior SSD officials in Portland “to discuss the ceasefire and increase the withdrawal of federal forces from Portland.”

CNN approached VSD to comment.

El. The letter states that customs and border guards are requesting teams of around 20-25 staff. More specifically, the agency is looking for representatives of the special unit that has been provided with tactical training, who can be called upon to deploy immediately when needed. El. The letter also invites agents from another Border Patrol unit providing search and rescue response and intelligence personnel.

Wheeler sought to defuse tensions in the city between residents there, protesting racial inequality and police brutality, and federal agents sent there by President Donald Trump earlier this month to protect federal property.

For several nights, largely peaceful protests in the city proved brutal as a small subgroup of riots set fire and fired fireworks at the federal courthouse in the city center. The issue prompted local Portland City officials and members of the Trump administration to engage in a public war of words over who was to blame for the rioters ’actions.

Although Wheeler had already urged federal agents to withdraw from Portland, his demand to meet with the SSD shows a change in the position of his previously established society. When the CNN asked last week if he was in touch with Wolf, the mayor downplayed the need for any communication.

“I have no reason to achieve it,”

; he said. “My demands are clear. I want them to come out.”

Wheeler and other Oregon officials have been critical of federal agents ’tactics. Recent videos from protest scenes show VSD staff detained protesters and released them on unmarked SUVs.

In one such video shared on Twitter by Oregon Elder Jeff Merkley, two masked, masked individuals with common “police” patches arrested a person wearing black clothing and threw him into an unmarked van before driving. CBP found that the officers belonged to that agency and indicated that the man had been wanted for questioning about a possible crime. However, an SSD official said he was later released.
“The tactics used by the Trump administration on the streets of Portland are disgusting,” Wheeler told CNN last week to Jake Tapper about the “state of the Union.” “People are literally being taken off the street in unmarked minibuses, rental cars. Apparently, they are not allowed to cause a cause. They cannot refuse the proper process.”

Wheeler himself gasped for gas last week after joining a crowd to listen to protesters and answer their questions in response to brutal clashes between demonstrators and federal forces. It is not known at this time who is responsible for the release of tear gas, and there is nothing to suggest that the mayor was directed.

The actions of the agents are now being reviewed by the Inspectors General of the Department of Justice and the SSD.
