In about the next week, I will document my Tesla Model Y buying experience along with the first impressions of the car.
My 2017 Model X three-year lease would have ended on August 11, and I tried to match my Model Y delivery time as closely as possible. But Tesla representatives said my Model Y would arrive on July 19, and if I don’t pick it up (or through a three-day window), I’ll have to jump to the back of the queue and wait until September or later. I agreed to accept delivery on Sunday, June 19th.
Tesla called me on day 17 to say that my model Y was a week late …
So I had to keep the Model X for another week. Normally it would be a lot of fun, but our Model X has been a lot of trouble lately, but even from the start.
Tesla Model X worries
Of the three (now four) Teslas I have, the Model X was the most reliable, and it alleviated much of the excitement of one of the most advanced cars on the road.
I should point out that we were going to rent a new 75D Model X, but in preparation for the order, the seller told us the dismantled 90D with AP, 22-inch turbine wheels, premium sound, etc. with about 3,000 miles it became available. As rents will be lower, and supposedly they were mints, we jumped.
Unfortunately, soon after moving home, the rear left axle began to tremble loudly. We took it to the store and Tesla allegedly tidied it up.
No, they took me back to the store and they said there was nothing wrong. I forced the service technician to get in the car and drive around the block. Tesla has decided that major repairs are needed in a few weeks. A few weeks later, I received the Model X. I tested it around the block and it looked good.
But on the way home it started ringing again. So I decided to just live with it … for three years.
The 2017 Model X was a pretty solid car, otherwise. But I have a few other gripes:
- The range never exceeded the specified 256 miles. Part of what I found is that the wheels of the 22-inch turbines will go the high mileage. Even snow tires on a set of 20-inch standard wheels have gained better mileage.
- Sometimes the Falcon Wing door or trunk will close unexpectedly or open unexpectedly without asking. Everything got so bad that the sound of a closed door sounds so Tesla makes my family go crazy like some kind of PTSD. We joked that between the jerky Autopilot and the door, Tesla tried to kill us.
- The third row seat lift button is difficult to find and activate. I think Tesla fixed this in later models.
- Dropping the kids was too flexible a show with those doors. I would like a low profile option.
My wife loved the machine endlessly, even with the flaws listed above. And frankly, I did too. We took him from New York to Florida and headed west to Ohio with very little hassle. The main long-distance trip in our vehicles takes three hours north to Vermont – about 180 miles – all winter before the snowboard. We also do some summer trips there.
We could never go on a 180-mile trip in the winter with our Model X. We’ve done this several times already in the summer, but that requires overwhelming driving and getting into the electron equivalent of smoke.
And one last thing: about a month ago, the main screen of our Model X went dark. We tried all the tricks to get it back, but to no avail. Tesla said we would have to bring it to fix it, but we didn’t have it until the lease expired – in about a month. I thought it was pretty crazy because it’s an integral part of driving. Turn signals do not work, there is no temperature control and no music. Basically it was my first car.
Y model “upgrade”
Running Model X problems makes the Y model interesting. I know from experience that the Model 3 can easily reach a real distance of 300 miles, so I’m sure the Y model will be able to cover it without stopping in the winter. This week we’re even going there with a bike towing hook that should definitely test the range. And, of course, from our experience with the Model X, we know where all the charging stations are.
We almost never used 3rd row seats unless we were picking up people at the airport or some other extreme occasion when my children’s friends came – which was always a nightmare. It’s hard to imagine that in the COVID age! Either way, I’ll not be happy to go to airports and go around a bunch of kids. And under that emergency scenario, I’ll just throw a kid or two in the trunk a few miles away. I spent half my childhood that way and it turned out well for me.
Our frantic Siberian Husky on our weekly trips would just occupy the fur at the back and the seats down. The Y model has a better barrier than our 6-seater X model.
I also really like driving the Model 3, while driving the Model X feels a little more like a speedboat captain. I hope the Model Y is the gap between my wife’s love of driving higher and my show of choice.

Y model purchase compared to rent?
On the one hand, I’m so glad I don’t have to sell the Model X. Even in the end, after it is repaired, I don’t think I would have acquired its value, and I’m sure who bought it. complain about axle problems. Now it’s up to Tesla to decide.
But at the same time, rents are high, and we had to shorten our trip to Model X to get to the 12,000 miles a year we had allocated ourselves. I decided to buy a Y model so we didn’t have to think about those things.
Model Y – fully self-driving?
Due to the aforementioned “Model X autopilot trying to kill us” problem and Tesla’s previous promises about the history of FSD, I decided not to delay. But a few weeks before delivery, Tesla reduced the price of the Y model to $ 3,000, and the Tesla website said I could add FSD for $ 7,000. With a difference of $ 4,000, I felt it was a reasonable price considering the risk / reward. However, Tesla came back and paid me $ 8,000 for the FSD, so I removed it and will decide to include the FSD later (perhaps when the price goes up again).
I have a lot of thoughts on FSD, which I delve into in the video above. The bottom line is that there’s a lot of uncertainty, and even if Elon is right this year and they have FSD in their cars, that doesn’t guarantee that Google / Waymo won’t get it and pay nothing for it.
Y model options
At the time of ordering, the Y model did not and still does not have many options and configurations. I got a white cabin, but I updated the wheel because of problems I had with the big Model Y wheels. Not only will you drive better on poor New York roads with smaller wheels, but you’ll also increase efficiency and handling in bad weather. Black wheels look beautiful on white paint; however, this was not an easy solution.
I received a third-party hook for $ 322 instead of Tesla’s $ 1,000 / $ 1,200 before / after the purchase price. I hope to install the video later this week.
